(Nyege Nyege Tapes)
Mali's Diaki specializes in a sound called electro balani, and in particular his strain of it known as balani fou, or "crazy balani," which he's been perfecting for 30 years. That name is instructive: his music often reaches 180 BPM, with frenzied drum fills between each kick that makes the music feel even faster. He's known for making live balani fou remixes on the fly, bringing the pressure up to breaking point as he crams more and more drums into each musical phrase. The style is illustrated on his acclaimed Nyege Nyege debut album Balani Fou, where you can hear crazy balani in is full glory: trailblazing, blustery and intoxicatingly uplifting.
