(Berlin / Wagon Repair, Crosstown Rebels)
Mathew Jonson is one of the pioneers of electronic music live performance as we know it today.
The Canadian artist takes influence from house, techno, electro and drum & bass, and he has a deep catalogue of tracks, including the seminal track Marionette, released through the Wagon Repair label he cofounded—as well as other projects through Crosstown Rebels, Kompakt, Hypercolour and m_nus. His history with classical piano and jazz drumming lends his tracks a distinct musicality that comes to life in his live performances, an improvisatory flair that he explores even further in side projects and collaborations like Cobblestone Jazz, The Modern Deep Left Quartet, Midnight Operator and, more recently, Sebastian Mullaert's Circle Of Live project. Most recently, Jonson debuted the Freedom Engine alias for an acclaimed album on Dekmantel, showing that almost 20 years into his career, Jonson remains at the top of his game.
