(New York / Sermon 3 Recordings)
The 83rd is probably best defined as an experimental hip-hop producer, with shades of noise, ambient and leftfield electronics. He's worked with artists like Angel Haze and Jamie xx in the past and did remixes for Missy Elliott and Mariah Carey working under Joshua Maurice before that. But it's as a solo artist that he's made his mark, inspired by his synaesthesia. He makes murky, arcane beats that mess with your spatial senses while you nod your head. He runs the Sermon 3 Recording label and collective, which has become a nexus for some of New York's weirdest experimental electronic, as well as a media portal for all things underground. More recently has worked with Eartheater and DJ Slugo, last year released the powerful album The Resurrection, followed by an acclaimed edits pack called Editz 83 this year. Raw, noisy and emotional, these releases sum up The 83rd's approach.
