Working with Brazilian collective MAGMA, Refraction created an immersive, entangled web of space and time in São Paulo in July. The event centered on the work of eight digital artists, including the decolonial textual work of RIKKA and Jean Petra's sci-fi hyperpop, along with eight DJs, whose music encompassed Kontronatura's bass-heavy futuristic electro and techno breaks to the dembow futurism of apropriadamente. There was a sense of exploring a whole new universe that cut across both physical and social geometries and boundaries, as Web3 possibilities soldered onto in-person programming. And the intimate nature of the event encouraged conversations with creators and punters alike, who were curious and excited about the intersection of the metaverse and underground culture.
