During Miami Art Week last year, Refraction capped off a huge 2022 with an unforgettable three day event series. The first two days at Future of Cities Innovation + Climate Hub in Little Haiti presented specifically commissioned new works and prioritized Refraction's well established core values of Creative’s First. With art by over 30 artists and 15 musical acts — including new works by Andy Rolfes, Kim Asendorf, Sky Goodman and Nicolas Sassoon, and an unforgettable movement-based performance created by Jimmy Edgar, with further sets by Marie Davidson, Doss, and a headlining performance from Yaeji, the two evenings felt more like a collective experience than a traditional exhibition. The vibe in Miami was about bringing the Refraction Festival to life—and with over 2500 people in attendance, the energy was palpable.
The third day featured two sold out screenings at the Frost Science Planetarium, where the entire audience were left speechless after witnessing Danny Daze’s immersive and mind-bending panoramic visual album BLUE.
Both days began with the Refraction Summit co-hosted with Water + Music, featuring panel discussions and roundtables questioning the future of web3 and AI technological advancements. Expect to hear more about our findings from the sessions soon, as well as an NFT drop and accompanying recording of the “web3 for whom?” panel presented as part of the W+M Wavelengths series. Huge thanks to our panelists and roundtable facilitators for bringing these sessions to life; Abieyuwa (African NFT Community), Jac Vaca (Polygon Studios), Nicholas Padilla (Miami Community Radio), Steph Guerrero (Tellie), Agnieszka Kurant, Fabiola Larios, Moises Sanabria, Sasha Stiles, Anna Bulbrook (Metalabel), Regina Harsanyi (Museum of Moving Image), and Tony Lashley (Marine Snow).
