Refraction’s latest Berlin event took place at despace in Kreuzberg last week (13-20 Oct) in partnership with Tezos and Infinite Objects. Entitled “Surveyors of Magic” Tabitha Swanson curated 16 artworks from the Refraction collection, describing the magic of memories, dreams, and experiences refracted through the digital lens. Reality has been translated and transposed by the artists into the language of magic through different digital mediums including AI, digital painting, video art, 3D renders, and more.
Interlaced into the playful exhibition installation of Craig Barrow, the artworks featured in Surveyors of Magic were first unveiled during a lively vernissage which gathered Refraction community members, including Cibelle Cavalli Bastos and Sarah Friend, for a night of conversation and celebration of the show. Wikihow Adventure Cruise soundtracked the night, spinning music from his eclectic collection.
The exhibition also hosted an afternoon ambient listening session for folks looking to immerse themselves in sound and art on their Sunday afternoon. Local DJ and artist DJ Lost, host of Berlin’s ‘Music for Airports’ party, took to the decks for a journey through leftfield and classic ambient sounds.
The full exhibition was preceded by a preview at despace, which took place during Berlin Art Week (16-18 September), and featured a teaser of the show. This preview marks Refraction’s first time showcasing during Berlin Art Week and gave the presented works additional opportunity to be viewed and collected by international audiences, including by attendees of the Vertical Crypto Art symposium which ran concurrently with the show at despace.
